Quilting

So in my attempt to get things finished up before I start work I got Alexander's quilt down and decided I would finish it. He is a great kid and deserved his quilt about 5 years ago but there was always a dearth of space and time to get it done. Space more than time. So I went to the local fabric store and picked a backing and a batting. The batting was (breathe, breathe) 12.99 a yard and I need 4 yards. So I decided that on February 1 my 40% off anything not on sale q (coupon) would go into effect making my ridiculously expensive purchase a little less ridiculous. So on February 1 the batting goes on sale 30% off.
$51.96
30% off is $36.37
40% off is $31.17
so I am looking at this and thinking (a little angry!) that I could buy a WHOLE FINISHED QUILT for $51.96! Not only that it would probably come with SHEETS!!
So I am thinking about batting it with polar fleece, which is a great material that seems relatively long lasting. Or an old blanket. It's just NUTS to pay more for the parts than the finished product!!
Then I thought, why not make it a cover. Then he can put his big dekka in it (it's a large pillow like blanket full of feathers we got in Germany. Warm. Soft.). So what used to be a thrifty way to provide bedding has gotten to be an Upper Class Expensive Hobby. It's just sad! And don't tell me to order 4 yards online, because the shipping will make it the same price.

There is little more discouraging than finding out you can't finish a project to your satisfaction though. I was looking forward to using the rest of the batting for making baby quilts and maybe those "waldo" type Spy quilts, where you make two of each square and have to match them, using all kinds of goofy fabrics with tiny objects of interest for a child on them.... Now I know why they make "mini" quilts. The big ones are just cost prohibitive. Kits to make quilts this size are around $20.00.

So Alexander might have to wait a little while for his quilt yet. And we're still doing construction and there is dust and sawdust everywhere so it's probably good for me to wait on that anyway. Now on to my next project! Getting ready for the food storage class at the newspaper office.
And finding a white shirt to wear to work.

Why is this so hard? Come on, it's a white shirt!
Ok well I have specifications:
1. Must have sleeves of some kind, short or long or 3/4.
2. Must not be transparent. No one wants to see my bra.
3. Must be able to be tucked in. I am not wearing a crop top to work.
4. Must really be white, just white, so it goes with nearly anything.
5. Would be nice if it were a classic style, nothing with a strange cut or anything.

The World is not into white shirts right now!! Sorry! It's just not The Color this Season! I could buy a white sweater, form fitting to show every bulge.... or bulky enough to suffocate. I could buy a knit shirt, but it would look like I was wearing my husband's t-shirts to work, how dressy is that? But a plain white shirt... rare as hen's teeth! I was thinking, Collar, buttons... maybe a little decoration that is also white... AAHHHH! And you know what, I would even, in a perfect world, like it to be.... WRINKLE FREE.... but that's just waaaay too much to ask. For all the good it does me, Fashion is For The Birds!
Yes I have seen The Devil wears Prada... and I believe it!
